Today, August 15th is the Assumption of the blessed Virgin Mary.
What is it all about?
Assumption day is the belief of when Mary, the foster mother of Jesus Christ had, ‘died’. Her body was assumed up into heaven to be reunited with her soul, instead of passing on Earth and going through the natural process of physically decaying over time.
Why is it important?
Its an important day for the Catholic church and is considered to be the heavenly birthday for mother Mary in heaven since it was the day that Mary was brought/assumed up into heaven by the lord.
Fun facts about Mother Mary!
Her blue cloak is recognised to symbolise; the virgins purity, the sky, and label as an empress* since the colour blue is associated with Bryzantine royalty.
(Empress; a woman who is a sovereign ruler of great power and rank, especially one ruling an empire.)
Since the Church is the “Bride” of Christ, it makes sense that the bride should cover her head as a sign of authority, hence the reason why she covered her head in most of the paintings she is seen in.
She was around the ages, 15-16 when she had baby Jesus
Unlike in her paintings, where shes painted as a white woman, she is actually believed to be black/ a darker shade of skin colour since she and Jesus were in the Middle East. You can see these paintings by searching up, ‘Black Madonna’.
In some paintings, she is seen with a knife through her chest/heart. This indicates the sorrows that Mary had experienced in her lifetime, particularly through Jesus’ passion.
